Seeing sporadic, minimal improvement. Walking without any aids even if I do look strange. At least I am not in a wheelchair anymore. I still remember coming home in one.

Still quilting. Have done about 70 of the Tula Pink City blocks, a quilt using all of my mask fabrics, 600 masks. I swear the mask fabrics keep regenerating--I've done the masks, cut at least five queen size quilts, my twin, cut the scraps down into 4 shapes and sizes, leaving whatever pieces were still large enough for new masks (God forbid) and I STILL have the LL Bean Boat and Tote (largest) overflowing! And I did the year-long sew along with Temecula Quilt Company that just ended (lasted a year). Used the first Charleston collection by Judi Rothermel. Yardage has been properly aging since before the ark!

Counted cross stitch has helped with the frustration of limited hand sewing. I can rotary cut with my right hand only but as accurately as before. I miss being able to cut with either hand equally but at least I can do it with one. Still fussy cutting and am better at using both hands while pressing. Slow but steady for sure.

Pic above is from my trip to the St. Lawrence in September 2017; one of the last teaching trips I made. Life certainly has been an adventure!

Hope everyone has a happy and healthy new year. Be safe and stay safe. From the back...

From the front.

My first applique label. I only had a bit of selvage left so I machine stitched that onto the label first, inked the rest of the label and then appliqued it. You can biggie size any of the pictures by tapping with your mouse. A doll quilt for a little girl named Arabella from the Arabella fabric line a bit ago. She got it yesterday and she was very happy even though she did not understand about the incredible story of having a fabric line named for her.

Will quit here for today. While still some lasting (so far) impairment, I have made progress! For the moment I cannot figure out how to add photos, so I will describe what skills I am glad to see a glimpse of.

First, I've been able to hand APPLIQUE my sleeves and complete labels to my quilts and to hand finish binding. It takes a bit longer than before...but it's better than nothing and looks like my old stitching.

Second, I hand pieced a full hexagon block with pass-throughs, circled eight seams to finish another block. Again, very slow going but the points and stitches are the same as before the stroke.

I am able to pin better, which has increased my accuracy.

I can rotary cut better, still only right handed, but it's easier to leap frog my left hand on the ruler and hold it; I rarely use the flat iron to hold the end of the ruler, and that is only on my 24".

Counted cross stitch is keeping me entertained. Getting more control and a better looking back.

Still knitting but better. Shawl started again and looks much better.

Have made close to 400 masks. I remember joking about Halloween fabrics when we started making them in March! Who knew we would need Christmas, too.

Had a bit of mask fabric in my bag and have started a mask quilt using 3.5" squares of all the mask fabrics alternating with a light blue speckle. 60 x 72 inches and about half done. No borders, just blocks to the edge.

As soon as I can figure out the pictures I will show you all this stuff and more. Also updating Hummingbird Highway's info on blog. She has moved her blog and you can read all the posts we have been missing. I'll try to be more frequently here this year.

Stay safe, wear your mask in public (correctly), socially distance and stay home when you can. Let's get rid of Covid 19 in both iterations early this year. All the best for 2021 to you and your family.

As Arnold Schwarzenegger says: "I'll be back." Threat or promise to be determined!

Distant, blissful hugs,

Sharon

Sharon Stroudhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15367438025168607681noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2214011696810847798.post-78848945272279413342020-07-12T10:22:00.000-04:002020-07-12T10:22:24.472-04:00Another Warm SundayHappy Sunday morning! Already hot and humid at 10:00 AM.

A bit of catchup. First today is a hexagon quilt I hand-pieced before the recent unpleasantness. After things improved a bit, I walking foot machine quilted it. For those who have the vapors because I machine quilted a hand-pieced top, GET OVER IT! I cannot hand quilt right now, but I was able to finish it this way. Opps, my area was not cleared off and two scraps of white fabric stuck to the back. I had finished the quilting when I discovered it and would have had to remove 6 lines of quilting to remove them (not skilled enough at that point to partially remove anything)..It's a cool Easter print on the back, it looks like a rabbit tail, so I chenilled it, and left it. A funny story for this piece!
Stuff will be available on Facebook Live or on YouTube with a delay. The pattern has four sizes and is free! They are planning lots of fun stuff, giveaways and a chance to sew together distantly.

You can find more information here:
https://quiltville.blogspot.com/2020/03/its-global-quarantine-quilt-along.html.

Watch the video to see how fun this will be! I am planning to sew but am not affiliated in any way. Just thought I would spread the fun! Hope to "see" you Sunday!

Blissful hugs at a distance,
The weather held off here, so travel was easy once you got off the icy driveway. Actually did some rearranging and put out my Sara:
Plain and Tall houses. Have had them since the 80's or 90's-- still stored all these years in the original boxes. Even washed, ironed and re-hung my kitchen curtains! The whole room looks brighter! Finished binding a hand-pieced apple core last night. Took me awhile to find the extra fabrics. Planning to rearrange my stash so the colors I use most often are not on shelves too high to easily reach. That's my next priority. What have you got planned for this last week of 2019 and beyond?

Are you remembering how special you each are?

Blissful hugs,
SharonSharon Stroudhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15367438025168607681noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2214011696810847798.post-57568280564571198952019-11-28T10:24:00.000-05:002020-04-28T17:17:05.832-04:00HAPPY THANKSGIVING!<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Yes, I'm still here. Tomorrow is the two-year mark. My left hand is a bit better, but still not like it was. I'm still quilting, but by machine for the time being. For some strange, unknown reason, I am pretty good at hand blanket stitch and am working to add a star to a quilt I machine pieced before all the unpleasantness. Machine quilting with my walking foot on my featherweight. It's true--I taught five featherweight classes this fall. Done now til I know the weather is not so iffy. Driving some, mowed my own lawn (2 acres) this year with my riding mower, did as much yard work myself as I could. Some people say "Witch" like it's a bad thing! ;-) I'm walking inside without a cane, but try to use one if I'm outside. All in all, I have much to be thankful for! What are you thankful for?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Back soon with pics of my new quilts--stay tuned!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My first hand stitches in about 15 months! I machine quilted a top I had pieced before the stroke and added binding. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A kit from Connecting Threads. Fused (what the ??) wool on cotton. Hand blanket stitched. A gentle reminder--ALWAYS cut the background bigger, applique, then cut it to size! I forgot, and the black raveled a lot, not leaving me enough room to bind. I chose to let the raveling work for me and machine appliqued the block to a bigger piece of black and raveled the edges. I chose a red/white fabric for the back (looks like snow), stitched right sides together with Thermore, then turned it right side out and ladder stitched the opening. A plus for Christmas 2019. The pattern called for French knots, which I couldn't do, so I sewed on red/white beads instead!
Yes, quilt fans! I was able to rotary cut yesterday! Top pic is all the scraps left over and the bottom is a good start on a plus sign tablerunner! It felt good but strange! Using an 8-1/2 x 12 ruler with no special grips. Easier to spread my hand and control. Perfect? No. Functional and accurate, yes. I've been cleaning in the sewing room--what a mess! Threw out (recycled) over half the stuff just in the island. I swear the house is levitating from all the stuff that's gone!

Have a wonderful Monday!
Just a quick note to say Happy New Year and so many thanks for the thoughts, prayers and comments over the past year! On a day when I was having a low moment, a card would come that made me think I actually could get better! Although I walk unaided with a lurch, I am out of the wheelchair and living independently. My left hand is getting stronger, with more gross motor skills--I'm hoping for finer ones soon! When this blog posts, I may try rotary cutting again. Have started cutting a plus sign runner. Beautiful chambray colors on a pale gray.

Many years ago, I longed for a year off to sew and catch up on quilting. Part of the wish came true--already 13 months off--but no sewing progress. Be careful what you wish for!

Many of you may think I had forewarning of the stroke--I did not. I had driven to the barn, fed and turned out the horses, driven home, turned on the computer, fed and brushed Dickens, and was simply walking across the kitchen when it hit. The drugs took effect and I was staying in ICU overnight. Apparently, I had a second stroke overnight--the one that caused the damage. Now I am 13 months into rehab for something that took seconds to cause! The neurologist said it was caused by a blood pressure spike. Normally my blood pressure is fine--nothing to treat for--just one of those things. I thank God that I am young enough, strong enough and determined enough to recover everything I can!

I did not have a picture of fireworks, but thought Traci's quilt would fill the bill! My design, Laurie Derr's machine quilting, and Traci's fine workmanship all combine into one fantastic quilt! The other pic is sunset on Lake George. A wish for all loveliness in 2019 and beyond!

Happy New Year, everyone! "See" you next year!

Giant blissful hugs to all,
Still in a wheelchair, my brother having to help me into and out of the car. Pudding-thick liquids, still in the nursing home. Now I can get in and out of the car, only use a cane on uneven ground, and my left hand is strong and getting better every day. Still knitting, but I have a strong urge to sew! Even poor stitching cues the hand recovery. Growing tired of reading so much and the cleaning/shredding is coming to an end. Way past time to be better--which I am--but I feel ready to try to adapt my procedures. It's been an interesting year but it has gone fast! Please don't take good health for granted! I don't think I did, but there is good lesson here somewhere! The neurologist did say mine was caused by a blood pressure spike--how on earth do you treat for that? Normally it was low, but it took just seconds to do the damage and it's over the year mark for recovery.
Making breakfast casserole for tomorrow. You'll find the recipe under the Recipes tab on the left sidebar.
I'm unable to pin so not much sewing. Left hand and leg slowly getting better; I can sometimes walk without a walker or cane. Am knitting a bit. Therapy still ongoing. Pompera is in Berkshire, New York, where I can still see her. Cannot pick up hooves for cleaning or brush her tail--need two hands for both things. She loves where she is staying and has lots of other horses, chickens/guinea fowl and dogs for company. The farrier has her shoes off; she looks WONDERFUL! Not driving myself yet, but my brother has had me out and practicing. Some things are easy, some things need adjusting. Have been cleaning closets and shredding old paperwork. Where does all this stuff come from? Lots of stuff for Thrift Shop and recycling. Enjoy every minute you can do what you love--all my stuff is on hold! Have you seen Yoko Saito's new book? It's a feast for the eyes--Amazing!

And it's snowing and sticking here--first sticking of the season. Sure it won't be the last!

Blissful hugs--I'm still here,
P.S. Dickens survived my absence and is fine.
I'm still healing and have done no needlework in the last eight months. What took seconds to happen has no end date. I still walk with a cane and my left arm/hand is getting stronger, but I cannot hurry the progress. For those who are interested, Pompera will be used for therapeutic riding, then come to me for retirement. My mind is willing, but there are many things I cannot do. I can brush her and love her, but I cannot move fast enough to get out of her way if she moves suddenly. I will be able to visit her and ride her and someone else will pay to feed her and for her expensive shoes. After spending years and part of my work life typing with two hands it is painful to use one finger! But I am healing - just slowly. At least my mind is intact and I'm still willing to take risks! A bit more slowly and with some planning, but I'm still here! I still miss you all and appreciate your many kindnesses!Sharon Stroudhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15367438025168607681noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2214011696810847798.post-18323396396059840872018-04-12T16:39:00.000-04:002018-04-12T16:39:16.438-04:00Dodging A Bullet After the stoke in November, a suspicious spot was accidentally found on a CAT scan. At the time nothing could be done. After waiting four months, yesterday was my appointment with a team of oncologists. I was prepared for them to want a biopsy, and it was right behind the breastbone (not an easy place to get at). Imagine my surprise when the team suggested I leave it alone! With no other symptoms, it may have been there since my birth, and it's a cyst not a tumor! I guess I was more worried than I thought about it and with four more months of hoping it wasn't growing, what a relief! A little more on left hand every day, but no strength yet. Little steps....no handwork yet. I'm hopeful every day.Sharon Stroudhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15367438025168607681noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2214011696810847798.post-76190209043240906062018-03-27T17:23:00.001-04:002018-03-27T17:23:28.412-04:00HOME
At long last, I am home to stay. Over the past four months I've only been home on short visits, with the proviso that I had to return to rehab ( I can't understand why they emphasized that to me). Dickens has come out of hiding and is keeping me company. Have not tried quilting yet--probably tomorrow, but I have been thinking of how I can modify what I want to do. One needs two good hands for many things. I will continue to make quilts--just a bit differently.

Hello to everyone. I was able to help someone who had a stroke near my timeline, helped several elderly folks, and can serve as a shining example of faith (or stupidity) in action. Be grateful for every day you are healthy and whole; it can be gone in less than a blink.

Blissfully counting down to spring,
It will seem heavenly. And quiet. Just me and the cat. No upstairs yet and Ieft hand a bit better.

But it is almost 100 days since coming to rehab. Mentally, I've been ready; physically not so much. I lost all use of my left side. My hand is slowly coming back and I can walk with a wheeled walker. Since it can take over a year for it all to come back, it's a waiting game. I am reading all the cards and comments, so keep them coming. I'll answer as soon as I get home.

Love and big hugs, and thanks,
