A Nose for News

And the news is:  Officially Karen was the first person with the correct answer.  But...Cindy may  have tipped subsequent participants, though her guess was wrong to start.  And...several new people actually left comments, and the guesses were excellent!  So...without further ado...everyone wins!  (What can I say?  I love comments!)

So, if Mittens, Josie, and Deb G. in VA will send their snail mail addresses to sharon@sharonstroud.com, I will get the prizes in the works.  Karen, Emily, Janet and Cindy--I've got your numbers!

Now I have a question.  I have a laptop which I love.  But, as you know, I have dial-up at home and lugging a laptop for a wi-fi connection is not a lot of fun.  So, for those of you who have opinions, would/do you like a reader like Kindle Fire or Nook Color or a real tablet (not necessarily an iPad).  I'm thinking of getting something a bit more portable so that I can actually view videos that are on-line, surf the web and maybe do a bit of reading.  Any suggestions?  I welcome all comments, good and bad, about anything related to e-readers and tablets--just be civil and use clean language, please.  Also, do you like getting magazines on e-readers?

Okay, that's it for tonight.  Congratulations again to our winners!

Regular hugs,
Sharon

  1. I have had a Kindle 2nd generation since 2009 and LOVE IT. I tried the Kindle Fire and sent it back because I do not have Wi Fi at home and it aggravated me. I cannot comment on a tablet but I am now looking at the Kindle Touch with 3G. The thing I liked about my first Kindle was that I could connect ANYWHERE and buy a book in under 60 seconds. I think the 3G will do that same thing, but need to do more research. I will be interested in add'l comments.

  2. I, too, have a 2nd Generation Kindle and love it for reading books. Originally, I was foaming at the mouth over the new Kindle Fire, but the security issues really scared me off. There isn't any password protection to prevent someone from ordering thousands of dollars worth of materials on your account if the reader gets stolen, ACK! In honesty, I would
probably get an Ipad which funtions still as a semi-laptop, an ereader, movie player, music player, etc. You also get a larger screen size so that you can actually have something to see without a microscope, LOL.

Of course, these days Android enabled phones do much of the same thing...

Good luck and hugs from the cold Mitten!!!

  3. I just got a Kindle 4 for christmas. The only problem is you have to have wi-fi (which I don't have) in order to order/download any reading material. I am looking into getting the hardware for wi-fi and hopefully that will solve the problem. Good Luck in your research.

  4. I have a Kindle 3g, with wi-fi, which I use for reading books. It is useful to have when on holiday, it saves so much room when packing.
Thank you for accepting my totally off answer, I am in the U.K. and enjoy reading about other peoples lives in different countries. I do not expect you to send me anything. I do not have a blog.

  5. We have a Kindle Fire that we got for Christmas....and we love it....easy, easy, easy to use..we have wi fi at home, so the downloading is easy. Mike is reading magazines on it..not sure how I feel about that. If you're interested, I may have a deal for you...bought one for an ungrateful daughter in law and haven't yet returned it (actually not sure what I was going to do with it)...if you're interested, we could strike a bargain.

  6. WOW ! Looks like I'm really behind the times as far as electronic reading devices. Nice to hear everyone's comments though! I've wanted a kindle forever -- just hasn't made it above the other items on the "wanted" list.

Thanks Sharon -- for the giveaway ! Cindy deserves the credit for my guessing the answer though.

Good luck on the reading device decisions...

    Cheers !

  7. I realize that you said not an iPad but honestly it's worth the extra money. It does everything and there is plenty of room for expansion. Next time we are both at Sue's shop I'd be happy to let you play with mine! Margaret

  8. I have had an ipad 2 with 3G and love it. I have service through Verizon. It costs me $20 per month for their lowest level of 3G. It doesn't support flash but I don't miss that. I can watch TV or a movie, read a book, play a game of solitaire, check my email or facebook. No matter what you want there is an app for that :-)

  9. I live in upstate NY and had dial up for ages. Last summer I checked with Verizon and bought a little device for $100 that gives me wireless. YES! If you can get cell phone service at your house check with Verison. THere are a couple of plans and while it is a little more expensive than dial up it is SO worth! Sometimes it is a bit slow, but even on a slow day it is faster than dial up. good luck.
